Thin Laptops and 2-in-1s Take Center Stage at IFA

Laptops and PCs received more attending at the IFA show earlier this calendar month than they did at CES, mayhap in role because it'southward closer to the vacation sales season, and maybe because gaming seems to be an even bigger deal in Europe than it is in the United states.

I was particularly impressed by how laptops continue to become more powerful and slim downward, oft at the same time, and how many offer better battery life as well. All of the vendors are doing their best to differentiate themselves in a competitive market, and Acer, Asus, Dell, and Lenovo presented new products at IFA.

Earlier the show, Intel had introduced its new laptop chips for the year: a four-cadre xv-watt version known every bit Whiskey Lake, and a two-core 5-watt version known as Amber Lake.

Whiskey Lake (now the U serial in the 8th Generation of the Intel Core family) is the version designed for near of the thin laptops; it'south a adequately minor upgrade over concluding year's Kaby Lake Refresh. All of the vendors brought two-in-1 notebooks. Dell showed off its Inspiron 7000, with optional Nvidia MX150 graphics, equally well as a 14-inch Inspiron 14 5000 with optional Nvidia MX130 graphics.

I of the more interesting options out there is Lenovo'southward Yoga Book C930, a $999 car that replaces the keyboard with an due east-ink display. Lenovo has tried machines without a physical keyboard before, but this one has a larger screen (10.8-in 2560-by1600) and bigger keys, so information technology may piece of work. Nosotros'll see.

Although Intel dominates the market for laptop chips, in that location were other entries. AMD was at the show, and showed off designs based on its Ryzen processor, especially laptops based on its Raven Ridge mobile designs.

Lenovo introduced the 2nd generation of a laptop using Qualcomm chips and based on ARM cores, the Yoga C630 WOS (Windows on Snapdragon), which uses a Snapdragon 850 8-cadre processor. This is a xiii-inch, 2-in-1 device that is 12.5mm thin and weighs but two.0 lbs. It'due south designed to be used with an LTE connection, and the company advertises 25 hours of battery life. Microsoft'south big push button seemed to be around "connected PCs," finer laptops with LTE connections (and later, 5G). Another interesting idea, though I practice wonder how many people will want to pay for a separate data plan for their PC. It'due south certainly worth watching, even so.

Of course, in that location were many gaming PCs at the show, from all of the large players, near of which pushed their dedicated gaming lines: Acer its Predator series, Asus its Republic of Gamer line (pictured), Dell its Alienware, and HP its Omen, which was shown in a gaming competition.
